For students to be aware of the happenings in their surroundings is essential for developing their worldviews and independent thinking. Nonetheless, to make it mandatory for students to study international news as a subject in school may face opposition and not be prudent.
On the one hand, it is a fantastic idea for students to collectively study international news due to the fact that they can learn more about the wider world beyond local or national borders. They would be able to understand politics, business and a range of other subjects on a global scale as well as debate their
classmates and teachers about various issues. In this way, they would be able to expand their cultural understanding and widen their ability to critically analyse global issues facing the world.
On the other hand, studying international news is not something that needs to be formally learned in a classroom setting. Students who are interested in current affairs can find time by themselves to read or
watch international news on their own. Furthermore, many students already have a heavy academic burden, and it would be impractical to add to their workload. Instead of dedicating a single class to learning about international news, perhaps educators can integrate current events into their business, economics, politics or even language lessons to allow students to gain awareness of what is going on in society.
To conclude, although it is excellent for youngsters to study international news, it might be difficult to schedule a separate class for every student and not everyone may even enjoy learning about it. To solve this issue, offering international news as an elective class may be prudent for curriculum makers and a fairer approach for all students.
