There is no doubt that professional workers such as doctors and teachers ought to receive excellent
salaries. Nevertheless, whether they should receive greater incomes than sports and entertainment personalities will be debated.
To argue that professional workers should be making higher incomes than celebrities signifies their work is more valuable to the public. Doctors help people to diagnose illness and teachers educate future generations, which are essential services for the smooth operation of any society. Additionally, the work most celebrities do relates to entertainment and enjoyment, which are not essential public services, such as singing, dancing, acting or playing sports. In other words, people can continue their lives without celebrities, yet it would be extremely challenging to live without physicians or educators.
Looking at the sheer number of professionals compared to the amount of famous people in any given country, the former significantly outweighs the latter multiple times over. As a result, since there are far fewer celebrities compared to professionals, there is a smaller supply of famous people and based on the laws of supply and demand, they ought to be receiving higher incomes. Furthermore, most celebrities possess a unique skill that is difficult to replicate such as acting, athletic or singing abilities that are not easily found.
Although professionals deliver valuable services to the population, in a free market economy, salaries are dictated by the laws of supply and demand. Celebrities are in short supply compared to professionals and their fans provide huge demand to support their salaries. Therefore, the market determines people’s salaries, which is fair in this day and age.
